Customers are able to sign up with an expired subscription date – or – customers are able to sign up without the subscription expiration date set.

This indicates that the settings have not been correctly configured.

You just need to navigate to the Expiration Preferences menu. Under the membership section and enable the “Block subscription with expired date” and “Block subscriptions if expiration date is missing”.
